Sudoku worksheets by class

Free printable sudoku for every class from Junior Infants to Sixth Class, with an answers page. Teachers are welcome to print as many copies as a class needs.

Junior and Senior Infants

4x4 grids, numbers 1 to 4

Start together on the board with one 4x4 puzzle. Children who know their numbers to 4 can usually finish one on their own after a single example.

First and Second Class

4x4, moving on to 6x6

Use 4x4 as a warm-up, then try 6x6 once the class is confident. The boxes in a 6x6 grid are two rows by three columns, worth pointing out first.

Third and Fourth Class

6x6, moving on to very easy 9x9

Most children of this age are ready for a full 9x9 grid if it gives plenty of numbers. Very easy puzzles start with 46 of the 81 squares filled and never need notes.

Fifth and Sixth Class

9x9, very easy to easy

A good fit for a ten-minute brain break or early finishers. Once very easy feels quick, Easy puzzles need the same skills with fewer numbers given.

Tips for the classroom

  • Teach the rule on the board with one puzzle first: every row, every column and every box has each number once.
  • Pencils, not pens. Rubbing out is part of the game.
  • Pair children up for their first sheet. Explaining a move out loud is half the learning.
  • Children who finish early can move up a grid size, or check a partner’s answers against the answers page.

Sudoku is a logic puzzle, not a maths one: no adding is needed. It builds patience, careful checking and reasoning step by step. For a quick explainer to share with parents, see how to play sudoku.
